About our Society
We are an active group of art lovers situated in the majestic Blue Mountains west of Sydney in Australia. The World Heritage Blue Mountains provides plenty of stimulation for visual creativity and is the home to some of Australia’s finest artists.
Our aims are to foster and encourage the enjoyment of art and to increase community awareness of its potential.

The Society of Mountain Artists, known as the SMA, provides opportunities to expand knowledge in artistic skills through a wide range of activities. These include demonstrations from accomplished artists, workshops, en plain air, painting days to improve skills, the exhibition of members works, visits to major galleries and painting holidays.
The SMA is an incorporated association and is always keen to welcome new members. To find out the full range of benefits, we invite you to explore this website from the above menus. Members and visitors are welcome to attend all activities.
History
The Society of Mountain Artists has been meeting since 1986. It was begun by two artist friends, Sheila Todd and Kath Kelly, who wanted to provide a group made up of artists, of varying skill levels, like-minded friends and partners, who enjoyed sharing their ideas.
It was to provide a friendly atmosphere of inspiration and encouragement.

They met initially in private homes and various locations in Wentworth Falls and Leura until the Wentworth Falls School of Arts provided a residence for the Society.
In 1988 the SMA became a cooperative limited and in 2003 was incorporated as a not for profit organisation.
In 2026 we will be celebrating 40 years of the Society of Mountain Artists.
